S.NET 2011 Apply for Funding

The S.NET Program Committee is pleased to announce the availability of approximately $19,000 in travel stipends for scholars presenting papers at the upcoming S.NET 2011 meeting in Tempe, Arizona, USA.

Under a grant from the US National Science Foundation, S.NET will make travel stipends available according the following priorities (in descending order, derived from NSF priorities):

  1. US-based graduate students and post-doctoral trainees who would not otherwise be able to attend;
  2. developing world students, post-docs and researchers who would not otherwise be able to attend;
  3. junior faculty or researchers from the US or Canada with documented financial hardship;
  4. and students, junior faculty or researchers from low-income countries in Europe with documented financial hardship.

In addition, the two host organizations, the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at Arizona State University (CNS-ASU) and the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at the University of California, Santa Barbara (CNS-UCSB), are offering an additional $5,000 in travel stipends for international scholars.

If you have had a paper, panel, poster, or other format activity accepted for S.NET 2011 and consider yourself eligible for a travel stipend, please send an email to david.guston@asu.edu describing your eligibility, including an estimated budget and (for applicants to categories 3 & 4 for NSF funds and any applicants for CNS-ASU and CNS-UBSB funds) documentation of financial hardship, e.g., a note from a department chair, center director, or supervisor attesting to lack of travel funds.  All requests for travel stipends must be received by 22 August 2011.

Recipients of travel stipends are expected to fulfill all requirements of the meeting and NSF sponsorship, including registering for the S.NET 2011 meeting, participating in the program as scheduled, traveling on US-flagged carriers, and presenting original receipts for legitimate expenses (see below) for reimbursement, etc.  For more details about travel requirements for the use of such funds, please see: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappguide/nsf11001/aag_6.jsp#VIG1.

The stipend may be used toward legitimate S.NET 2011 conference costs, including airfare and other transportation costs, registration, and housing at the conference venue.  Award size will depend upon the number of applicants but will generally be between $500 and $1000.  In no case will the award size be larger than actual expenses.  To ease the burden on travelers and facilitate the full and appropriate use of stipends, CNS-ASU staff will assist awardees with registration, hotel and air bookings, etc.
