PhD Candidate, Political Science, UC Santa Barbara

Galen Stocking has been a CNS graduate fellow since 2011.  He is a PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  His research interests include political communication, particularly as it relates to online communication and organization; citizenship; political discussion; the interaction of technology and society; and international organizations. At CNS, he works with IRG2 to explore how policy affects innovation in emerging technologies, and works on a X-IRG project on social media discussion of nanotechnology and other emerging technologies. For his dissertation, Galen re-assesses theories of media and public agenda setting in the modern media environment in the United States. To do so, he has compiled a dataset of traditional, online, and social media data over a 4 year time period, and is currently using large-N statistical methods to explore this data. He also is a member of an interdisciplinary social media research group at UCSB.
