Bridget Harr is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, with doctoral emphases in Black Studies and Feminist Studies.  As a Graduate Research Fellow in IRG-3 at the Center for Nanotechnology in Society (CNS), her work examines public perceptions of the risks and benefits of emergent technologies, and how these vary by race, class, and gender.  Her dissertation research focuses on racial formation in science and medicine, by examining how popular and medical understandings of race and disease traverse and transform different social, political, and historical contexts.  Analyzing racial justice movements that seek to address and redress racial inequality, in part by critiquing the study of race in science and medicine, she hopes to gain insight into how members of the public participate in the construction and contestation of scientific and medical knowledge.
