Rachel Cranfill is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests include language use in math and sciences, with a particular focus on gender. She received her B.S. in Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College in 2009.

 

At CNS, she is working with Barbara Herr Harthorn on public risk perceptions of nanotechnology. She is studying the linguistic practices of participants in the 2009 deliberation groups and is currently concentrating on gender and the linguistic construction of scientific and non-scientific expertise.
