FutureScape City Tour: An Exploration of Emerging and Mundane Technologies in Urban Settings

Download details here (pdf)

We often overlook the complex and intricate landscape of our urban setting.  Commonplace technologies from cell phones to GPS devices, from street sweepers to walking shoes, permeate our environment. Behind the scenes, light switches and a maze of pipes treat us to the light and water we often take for granted. Because we’ve become so accustomed to these resources, we often overlook the technology that produces, drives, or supports them. Please join us for a walking tour around Tempe, Arizona, to creatively explore the urban scene and reflect on the role of emerging technologies in transforming the landscape. With a keen eye and open mind, participants will be encouraged to capture images of technology use in the Tempe area, so they can later revisit, critique, sequence, and synthesize their experiences.

Inspired by Kevin Lynch’s concept of wayfinding, the tour will offer the public an opportunity to:

  •  Look at the city with a different intention and gaze.
  •  Understand the technology choices rooted in place.
  • Critique technology futures in urban settings.
  • Define and explore ‘material deliberation’ as a prototype.
  • Share and exchange collected data.
  • Reflect on experiences and images.

The “Finding Futures” walking tour will involve a pleasant stroll down the streets of Mill Avenue and a hike up A-mountain, where participants will be encouraged to observe their surroundings, wander around, and take photos. Participants may playfully explore Lynch’s work by untangling the human relationship and the built socio-technical environment. The walking tour will conclude with a roundtable back at the conference location.

Be sure to bring a camera or smart phone, comfortable shoes, and sunscreen.

Pathways for Nanoscale Science and Engineering

to Address Urban Sustainability Challenges: A Walking Audit and Reflection

Download details here (pdf)

Please join us for a walking audit during Arizona’s pleasant autumn climate to explore the Phoenix Gateway community– a neighborhood bound by Sky Harbor airport to the south and state highways to the north, east, and west.  The community is bisected by the Grand Canal and houses a workforce-orient community college, cultural center, historical museum, hotels, businesses, and residents. Community members residing there are faced with the challenges of historic subsurface contamination, diverse socio-economic conditions, and the construct of the built environment. Social diversity, economic constraints, and ecological stressors present grave challenges for the Gateway community as well as many other urban communities.

“Pathways” will offer an opportunity for scholars and practitioners of nanoscale science and engineering to engage with and reflect upon the challenges faced by scholars and practitioners of place-based sustainability initiatives.  The goals of ”Pathways” include:

  • Engaging with place-based settings in which NSE offer potential solutions.
  •  Identifying and reflecting on the critical socio-economic challenges that could constrain or enable technological solutions.
  • Building capacity for critical thinking about technological solutions across different stakeholder groups.
  • Building capacity to foresee unintended consequences, long-term implications, community buy-in, and social and environmental influences.

”Pathways” will entail a trip to the Gateway community by light rail to talk with experts working within the community, walk through the community, and engage with citizen-advocates to enrich the dialogue with personal narratives.  The walking audit will conclude with a reflection period back at the conference location.
