Dr. D’Arcangelis was a postdoctoral scholar with the UC Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEIN) working at CNS-UCSB from 2010-2011. She is a feminist science studies scholar interested in non-expert engagements with emerging science and technology. In her dissertation she studied the production of cultural discourses about disease during the post-9/11 disease scares and "biosecurity" policies implemented in their wake. She illustrated the centrality of cultural constructions of gendered and racialized disease carriers and biodefense personnel to the persistence of both the disease scares and subsequent disease control policies. Working with Barbara Herr Harthorn and Terre Satterfield in Interdisciplinary Research Group 3, Dr. D’Arcangelis trained her qualitative research expertise, in addition to bioscience laboratory experience, on an EPA/NSF mixed methods qualitative/quantitative study of gendered and raced environmental risk perceptions about nanotechnology in the U.S. This study collected data on public concerns with nanotechnology and its potential impacts on the environment, serving as part of the broader research aims of UCSB's Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (http://www.cein.ucsb.edu/).
